View Ridge Tennis Team
VRSTC TENNIS TEAM

The View Ridge Tennis Team is a summer league youth team that is open to all View Ridge junior members, aged 9 through 18. We are excited to embark on our second season with the return of the tennis team! Our goal is to develop players skills, strategy and mental toughness while creating community with fellow members. We strive to facilitate a competitive and joyous environment that also highlights sportsmanship and friendship.

COACHES
Julia Haussmann High School/Middle School Coach
TBD Elementary School Coach

The team participates in the North End Junior Tennis League (NEJTL), competing against five other clubs. While our club has had a long history of competing, this will be our second year back competing as a team after some time away. Our season will begin practices the week of June 24th. Each week, our Middle and High School teams will travel around the north end of Seattle competing in dual matches on Wednesdays, from 2-5pm, against other clubs. There will be five matches over the summer, beginning July 3rd, along with an end of season tournament. The tournament is broken up into four categories – 14U Boys, 14U Girls, 18U Boys, and 18U Girls. Players can enter into their respective age group and compete in either the doubles or singles tournament

Practices for the Middle and High School Teams will be held on Friday afternoons. Middle and High School practice will run over two hours but players will be assigned to one hour groups to keep the player to court ratio low. (Example, High School practice is 12-2pm, players will be split to play at either at 12pm or 1pm).

Our Elementary Team will not travel but play internal View Ridge doubles matches (or singles matches depending on attendance for that day) on Friday mornings. This is a great opportunity to get match play experience. We highly encourage our Elementary Team to continue to develop their skills in our Mon-Thurs tennis lessons.)

What is the difference between the VR Tennis Team and VR tennis lessons?

Tennis lessons are skill focused. They run Monday-Thursday 10am-3pm. The Tennis Team is competitive match play and strategy focused. Players on the team compete in dual matches on Wednesdays 2pm-5pm and practices held between 10am-3pm on Fridays. Tennis Team members may participate in both lessons and tennis team (NOTE: Tennis Team members MAY NOT sign up for Mon-Wed lessons 2-3pm as this contradicts with dual matches).

SKILL LEVEL QUALIFICATION
High School and Middle School Teams
HS/MS Team is for members 12-18 years old. There are no official tryouts. Players must know how to keep score, the basic rules of the game, and can operate a match without support from a coach. They must know how to overhand serve and can maintain a rally of more than four shots. Players’ skill level should fall into one of three categories – “advanced beginner,” Junior Varsity and Varsity, see below the guidelines from the league. If you are unsure if your player qualifies, please reach out to Julia Haussmann!
_
Skill Guidelines:
_
Advanced Beginner: This player has taken a few lessons before and has participated in a match(es). They do not hit groundstrokes with topspin but can maintain a rally. This player can get their serve in most of the time. They know how to score and the basic rules of the game without help from a coach.
_
Junior Varsity Level: This player has participated on their High School’s JV Tennis Team or has the skills to make a JV Team (if still in Middle School). They may hit with topspin some of the time or have a consistent flat forehand. They have good footwork and can track and move to the ball. They are able to make most of their second serves and have some pace on their first serves. This player knows the rules of the game without support from a coach.
_
Varsity Level: This player competed on their High School Varsity Tennis Team or has the skills to make a Varsity Team. If they are in Middle School, they have played in tournaments/matches against other “Varsity level” players. They can hit with topspin consistently or have hard flat groundstrokes. The player’s serve is consistent and has direction to it. This player feels comfortable with volleys and overheads.
Elementary School Team
Skill Guidelines:
Our Elementary Team is for players 9-11 years old. Players do not need to have previous experience playing matches but should be able to rally at least 4 balls in a row, volley, and serve overhand or drop feed on a semi-regular basis. Please do not hesitate to reach out to the coaches to see if your child is ready for the Tennis Team!

MATCH LOGISTICS

How Dual Matches Work

Dual matches are casual but competitive. Matches are typically doubles focused but upon request, singles matches can be arranged. Over the three-hour match, players will be paired up with several of their teammates and play in multiple (six game) sets. Matches are played at several locations including the Kellogg Middle School, Shorewood High School, and Klahaya Swim & Tennis Club tennis courts.

Parents - How to get involved?

Looking to get involved? The Tennis Team is a community! We will need parents/guardians who are willing to drive carpool, bring snacks, and cheer on our players at each match. A google doc will be made in mid June to get prepared for the season.
